TOOTH WHITENING
(aka bleaching)
SNOW WHITE
(for big and little people)
Teeth come in all shapes and sizes AND most definitely colors. In the present day, most people want to have their teeth as white as possible. This is where tooth whitening, also known as bleaching, comes into play. In a relatively short time, without much effort or discomfort, and for a relatively modest price, most people can achieve lighter-colored teeth. Yes, we said “lighter-colored” because not everyone can achieve snow white teeth. Age, prior medications, and sometimes just enamel deficiencies can prevent the teeth from bleaching as well as most. However, it is always our recommendation to attempt to whiten the teeth first, because oftentimes the results are surprising.
The process starts with a thorough dental examination and digital full mouth x-rays to make sure that the teeth are healthy and don’t require dental treatment such as periodontal (gum) therapy, fillings, crowns, etc before proceeding. If all is healthy, then we perform a digital intra-oral scan of all of the teeth so that we can have a 3D image of the teeth in the computer. These dental images are then sent to the dental laboratory where they will fabricate the tooth whitening trays and return them to the dental office. Once we have the bleaching trays, you may either start the at home tooth whitening gel treatments, or we may perform an in-office tooth whitening treatment first using a stronger whitening gel and possibly a bright light to speed up the whitening process. Typically we have the patient use the at home whitening tray system each and every night for at least two weeks. Then if necessary we may perform one or more additional in-office tooth whitening treatments to get your teeth as white as possible. Some people are limited as to how often and for how long that they can whiten their teeth because they may have sensitive teeth. For this reason we often recommend using a desensitizing toothpaste (such as Sensodyne) for two weeks or more prior to whitening their teeth and also using that during the bleaching process. Typically most sensitivities are mild and dissipate several days after discontinuing the tooth whitening treatment.
We currently use two of the top line tooth whitening treatments in our office that we have seen the best results from. One is the KOR tooth whitening system by Evolve Dental and the other is Opalescence by Ultradent Dental. Both of these have excellent reputations in the dental world for safety and efficacy.

Dr. Nicholson applies the same expertise and artistry when additional repairs are needed in the best interest of the patient’s health, like:
Tooth-colored fillings: Sometimes referred to as “composite” or “white” fillings, these are safe and durable when a cavity needs to be filled.
Clear Aligner Therapy also known by the trade name “Invisalign.” This is where clear removable trays are used to straighten your teeth without ugly wire braces.
Root Canals: Sometimes referred to as “endodontics,” root canals can save a tooth even when its soft interior (called the “pulp chamber”) becomes infected. Once we clean out what’s bothering your tooth, it will continue to function without the pain and sensitivity you were likely experiencing before the procedure.
Emergency care: Yes, call us. Yes, we will see you. Priority is given to regularly scheduled patients.
