What is a dental crown?  Crowns are basically tooth-shaped coverings, or caps, that fit over a re-shaped tooth or teeth.  They can be used to restore a broken tooth or to help protect and support a tooth that has been damaged by tooth decay, cracking, or other dental procedures, like a very large filling or a root canal treatment.  Crowns can also be used for cosmetic dental purposes such as the correction of a discolored or misshapen tooth.  Crowns are used in dental implant and fixed bridge procedures as well.

As with dental veneers, crowns can match the existing tooth color or, if the patient prefers, can be lighter and brighter than the existing natural teeth. Porcelain/ceramic crowns can let light shine through, just like real teeth, so they look completely natural.
